Mitch Evans

The ABB FIA Formula E Championship has represented the next step in the future of international motorsport for several seasons now. Giltrap Group-sponsored racer Mitch Evans has gone from strength to strength with Jaguar Racing in the series. But of course, looking at the Kiwi driver’s career from a young age, his impressive achievements on the street circuits of the world are no surprise.

Widely regarded as one of the quickest drivers on the ABB FIA Formula E grid, Mitch Evans is proof personified that age is no barrier to entry.

Evans began karting at just six years old and between 2001 and 2007 won 13 karting titles and qualified for the 2007 World Rotax Final in Dubai as the youngest ever competitor.

In 2008 he swapped karts for the Formula Ford series where he claimed victory in seven out of 12 races, including an outright win of the Formula Ford Manfeild Winter Series. Evans ended the New Zealand National Formula Ford Championship of 2008/09 in second place and it’s worth noting he was also the youngest driver on the grid at just 14 years of age.

In 2009 Evans jumped the Tasman to compete in the Australian Formula Ford Championship. The season saw him break numerous records and he became the youngest round winner in the championship's history when he won at Sandown Raceway. He finished the season runner up having claimed six wins, three poles, six fastest laps and 15 podiums in 23 races.

It was this performance that caught the eye of Formula 1 driver, Mark Webber. The Aussie racer invited Evans into the F1 paddock for a garage visit and photo during the 2009 Australian Grand Prix. Just 12 months later, Webber signed a management deal with the young Kiwi, giving him the security to take his flourishing racing career further afield.

Evans made his debut in the Toyota Racing Series that same year with a pole position and win. He finished the 2010 season as the youngest ever champion. Evans also took home the International Trophy which ran concurrently with the TRS series.

The 2011 season of the Toyota Racing Series would see Evans claim the Championship title for a second time, winning six races and finishing on the podium in each race. An indisputable highlight of that year would be winning his first ever New Zealand Grand Prix – the youngest driver to ever achieve the feat.

At this point, a move to the frenetic European world of motorsport seemed inevitable, and Evans grabbed the opportunity to compete in the GP3 series with both hands. He would put the car on pole and win his second race, taking out the entire GP3 championship in spectacular fashion in the final race of the season. Along the way, Evans took three victories, six podium finishes and four pole positions.

Another year, another record-breaking appearance in 2013 as Mitch progressed into GP2, making history by becoming the youngest ever GP2 driver to reach the podium during his first ever race weekend in Malaysia. Throughout the season he scored three more podiums, including two in Monaco. The following two seasons would yield mixed results, but consistent wins and podium appearances kept Evans very much in the spotlight.

Changing tack in 2015, Evans’ next move was to compete in the historic 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race in the LMP2 class with Jota Sport alongside teammates Oliver Turvey and Simon Dolan. The trio would take 2nd place in class, with Evans chalking up another motorsport milestone in an already busy career.

But if career aspirations are to be framed by a single race series, then 2016 would mark the moment Evans found his race day calling. With the arrival of the electrified ABB FIA Formula E series, many manufacturers jumped at the chance to immerse themselves in the new realm of electric racing. Evans found a seat with Jaguar Racing – a position he has held since that first season.

Evans began the following season with a podium finish at the Hong Kong ePrix but a lack of consistency through the season made it tough to gain momentum. Evans finished seventh overall, claiming one podium and one pole position and finishing ahead of his teammate and season one champion Nelson Piquet Jr.

Having fought for the championship title until the last race of the 2018/19 season, Evans finished his third season in ABB FIA Formula E with Jaguar Racing fifth overall. He claimed the first victory for the team in its Formula E campaign at the Rome ePrix followed by a several podium finishes.

More wins have followed in the series as Evans has become one of the most experienced drivers in the series, while the team around him – having received the full commitment of the factory – also continue to hone their skills.

 

2024 SEASON 

Season Ten of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship was Jaguar Racing’s most successful yet. The Jaguar I-TYPE 6 cars of Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy achieved ten podiums, two wins, one pole position and a total of 368 points scored.

Those points were enough to propel Jaguar TCS Racing towards their first Formula E Team's Championship title, 36-points ahead of their main rival Porsche. Jaguar also secured the new Manufacturer's Championship with their Jaguar I-TYPE 6 car.

Evans finished second overall, just six points behind Pascal Wehrlein and painfully close to his first ever driver's championship. His most successful season to date saw him take 6 podiums, two of them victories, including a maiden win in Monaco.
